Function retainers, explained without the retainer-speak

TPThe Prime Silver teamPrime Silver Solutions

Retainers have a bad name, and mostly they have earned it. You pay a monthly amount for a vague allocation of hours, you never quite know what you got, and when you look at it properly you find you have been paying for availability you did not use.

A function retainer works differently, and the difference is worth understanding before you buy one.

One function at a time

Instead of a general retainer covering everything loosely, you retain help in a specific business function. Finance. Compliance. Marketing. Sales. HR. Each one stands alone.

So if your books are the thing eating your week but your marketing is fine, you retain finance and nothing else. You are not paying a blanket fee that quietly covers four areas you never ask about.

What you are actually paying for

Ongoing, hands-on work in that function. Not oversight, not a dashboard, not a monthly report telling you what already happened. Someone doing the work and embedding the systems that keep it done.

That distinction matters. If a retainer description could be mistaken for a reporting subscription, you are buying the wrong thing.

Adding and removing

You can stack them as the business needs more, and drop one when it no longer earns its place. Most businesses start with one or two and add a third months later, usually the one they were quietly doing badly all along.

The point is that it moves with you. You add support when it has earned its place, not before.

What it costs

That depends on which function and how much of it, so a number here would be guesswork. We scope it on a short call and give you a clear figure before you commit to anything.

What we can tell you is what we price against: the cost of a freelancer, or a first hire. Not a line-item bounty on individual deliverables, because that is a losing game for both of us.

The short version

Pay for the areas you actually need help with, one function at a time, and drop them when you do not. The work is implementation, not oversight.
